Best Auth0 alternatives (2026)

Auth0 is free up to 25,000 monthly active users (MAU), but the first paid plan is priced per MAU: on Auth0’s own calculator, B2C Essentials is $35/mo at 500 MAU and $700/mo at 10,000, and B2B plans start at $150/mo. Paid B2C plans drop the enterprise connection, self-service SSO and SCIM that the Free plan includes, and Auth0 has been part of Okta since 2021. These alternatives cover hosted auth with bigger free tiers (Clerk, WorkOS, Kinde, Stytch), auth bundled with a backend (Supabase Auth, Firebase Authentication), open-source libraries that keep users in your own database (Better Auth, Auth.js) and B2B-first SSO (Descope). Ranked by our evidence-based score, with Auth0 shown last for reference.

The short version

Clerk (87) is our top-ranked auth and the easiest swap for a Next.js or React app: its free Hobby plan covers 50,000 monthly retained users per app, against Auth0’s 25,000 MAU, and Clerk’s migration script has an Auth0 transformer. Better Auth (86) is the pick if you want users in your own database with no per-user fees, and it publishes an Auth0 migration guide. Supabase Auth (85) suits apps already on Supabase (50,000 MAU free, 100,000 on Pro). WorkOS (78) has the biggest hosted free tier (AuthKit free up to 1 million users) and a migrations CLI for Auth0. Kinde (76) bundles organizations and billing and can migrate users on first sign-in without a password export. Firebase Authentication (74) fits mobile apps on Google, Auth.js (73) is the classic free Next.js library (now part of Better Auth), Descope (70) includes 3 SSO connections on its free plan, and Stytch (68) is pay as you go with no hard caps. Auth0 scores 70, shown last for reference.

Why people look for an Auth0 alternative

Three reasons come up most. The jump from free to paid: Auth0 Free covers up to 25,000 MAU, but the moment you need a paid feature you pay per MAU from the first user. On Auth0’s pricing calculator (monthly billing, read Oct 17, 2026), B2C Essentials is $35/mo for 500 MAU, $700/mo for 10,000 and $2,100/mo for 30,000; B2C Professional is $240/mo for 500 and $1,600/mo for 10,000. Past 30,000 MAU the paid B2B and Professional plans show “Get in touch” instead of a price. B2B features gated: Free includes 5 organizations, 1 enterprise connection, self-service SSO and SCIM, but the paid B2C plans say “Upgrade to B2B to continue using EC, Self-Service SSO, and SCIM”. B2B Essentials (3 SSO enterprise connections, unlimited organizations) is $150/mo for 500 MAU and $2,100/mo for 10,000, and B2B Professional is $800/mo for 500 and $2,400/mo for 10,000. Free also has no Pro MFA factors, role management or account linking, and keeps logs for 1 day. Okta ownership: Okta completed its acquisition of Auth0 on May 3, 2021 (a net purchase price of about $6.5 billion, per Okta’s SEC filing), and Auth0 runs as a business unit inside Okta. Some teams prefer a vendor focused only on developer auth, or one whose prices are published past 30,000 users.

Quick picks by need

Fastest drop-in for Next.js or React: Clerk (prebuilt sign-in, profile and organization components; Pro $25/mo, or $20/mo billed annually). Own your users, no per-user fees: Better Auth (MIT); its optional Infrastructure add-on has a free Starter tier and a $20/mo Pro tier. Already on Supabase: Supabase Auth. Enterprise SSO without per-user pricing: WorkOS (AuthKit free to 1 million users; SSO and Directory Sync $125 per connection a month, cheaper in volume). Organizations plus billing on a budget: Kinde (Plus $75/mo includes enterprise SSO). Mobile apps on Google: Firebase Authentication. An existing NextAuth app: Auth.js keeps working and is free (ISC), but new builds should start on Better Auth. SSO on a free plan: Descope (3 SSO connections) or Stytch (5 SSO or SCIM connections).

Cost at small scale: the free plans

Auth0 Free: up to 25,000 MAU, 1 custom domain (card verification required), unlimited social connections, passwordless and passkeys, 5 organizations, 1 enterprise connection, no card to sign up. Clerk Hobby: 50,000 monthly retained users per app, unlimited apps, no card; MFA and passkeys need Pro. Better Auth and Auth.js: free open-source libraries; you pay only for your own database and hosting. WorkOS AuthKit: free up to 1 million monthly active users. Supabase Free: 50,000 MAU with basic MFA, but free projects pause after 1 week of inactivity and you get 2 active projects. Firebase Authentication: no-cost on Spark; with Identity Platform no-cost up to 50K MAU (50 MAU for SAML/OIDC sign-ins). Kinde Free: 10,500 MAU with MFA and organizations, no card. Stytch: 10,000 monthly active users and AI agents, unlimited organizations and 5 SSO or SCIM connections free, with no hard caps. Descope Free Forever: 7,500 MAU, 10 tenants and 3 SSO connections, no overages; you must upgrade past any limit.

Cost at 10,000 and 50,000 MAU

Computed from each vendor’s published rates (monthly billing unless noted). At 10,000 MAU: Auth0 is $0 if the Free plan’s features are enough; if you need a paid plan, its calculator shows $700/mo (B2C Essentials), $1,600/mo (B2C Professional), $2,100/mo (B2B Essentials) or $2,400/mo (B2B Professional). Clerk, Supabase, WorkOS, Kinde, Firebase and Stytch are all still $0 on their free plans, and Better Auth and Auth.js have no per-user fees. Descope’s free plan stops at 7,500 MAU, so you need Pro, from $249/mo billed annually with 10,000 MAU included. At 50,000 MAU: Auth0 Free no longer covers you, and its calculator shows “Get in touch” instead of a price for most plans above 30,000 MAU, so expect a sales quote. Clerk Hobby still covers 50,000 retained users per app ($0), or Pro at $25/mo with 50,000 included. Supabase Free covers 50,000 MAU, though a production app is usually on Pro ($25/mo, 100,000 MAU included). WorkOS is $0, and Firebase with Identity Platform is $0 up to 50,000 MAU. Kinde Pro is $25 + 39,500 extra MAU × $0.0175 = about $716/mo, and users you bill through Kinde don’t count. Descope is about $2,049/mo on Growth ($799 with 25,000 MAU, then $0.05 each) or $2,249/mo on Pro, billed annually. Stytch charges per MAU past 10,000 with volume discounts but doesn’t publish the rate on its pricing page, so we don’t quote a figure.

Moving your users off Auth0

Export the users: Auth0’s bulk user export (Dashboard or POST /jobs/users-exports) produces NDJSON or CSV files, but Auth0’s docs say it isn’t available on the Free plan; there you can page through users with the Management API, which is rate limited. Export password hashes: hashes aren’t available through the API. You request them in a support case, and Auth0 sends a PGP-encrypted export, so you generate a 4096-bit RSA key first. Auth0 says this isn’t available on the Free tier and it can’t guarantee a delivery date; WorkOS says it can take a week or more, and Kinde says up to 2 weeks on some plans. Auth0 hashes passwords with bcrypt, so targets that import bcrypt keep passwords working. Bulk import on the target: WorkOS (password_hash_type bcrypt, plus a migrations CLI for users, organizations and SSO connections), Supabase (bcrypt and Argon2 hashes), Better Auth (its Auth0 script imports users, accounts and bcrypt hashes and tries to migrate organizations), Kinde (an Auth0 import that accepts the NDJSON export directly, files up to 49 MB), Descope (its migration tool, with hashes from the Auth0 ticket), Clerk (migration script with an auth0 transformer) and Firebase (firebase auth:import with BCRYPT). Skip the wait: Kinde’s recommended drip-feed workflow checks each password against Auth0 on the user’s first sign-in, so no password export is needed. Social-login users reconnect the same provider, WorkOS users with SMS second factors switch to a TOTP app or email Magic Auth, and active sessions end at cutover.

When to stay on Auth0

Stay if you are under 25,000 MAU and the Free plan’s features cover you (it includes 1 enterprise connection, self-service SSO and SCIM), if you qualify for Auth0 for Startups (100,000 external MAU, enterprise identity providers and Pro MFA free for a year), or if a customer requires Auth0 features such as private cloud deployment, HIPAA BAA or Okta integration. Move when you need a paid feature and the per-MAU price is out of line with revenue: at 10,000 MAU, Clerk, WorkOS, Supabase Auth, Kinde and Stytch are still free, and Better Auth costs nothing per user.
