How they differ
Both are hosted auth with prebuilt sign-in screens. Clerk (87) is built for consumer and SaaS apps that want drop-in React and Next.js components, user profiles and organizations with as little setup as possible. WorkOS (78) is built around selling to companies: its AuthKit user management is free for a very large number of users, and it charges for each enterprise customer that connects single sign-on (SSO) or directory sync (SCIM).
What you pay for users
Clerk is free up to 50,000 monthly retained users (MRU) per app; a user counts as retained when they come back 24+ hours after signing up. Pro is $25/mo ($20/mo billed annually) with 50,000 MRU included, then $0.02 per user from 50,001 to 100,000 and less above that. WorkOS is free up to 1 million monthly active users (anyone who signs up, signs in or updates a profile that month), then $2,500/mo per extra million. At 100,000 users, Clerk Pro works out to about $1,025/mo billed monthly ($25 plus 50,000 × $0.02) while WorkOS stays at $0, though the two count users differently.
What you pay for SSO and SCIM
Clerk Pro includes 1 SSO connection and 1 directory sync connection per app, then $75/mo each for 2 to 15 and $60/mo each for 16 to 100. Clerk says billing for directory sync connections starts January 1, 2027. WorkOS charges $125/mo per SSO or directory sync connection for 1 to 15, falling to $100, $80 and $65 at higher volumes. So for five enterprise customers with SSO, Clerk Pro is about $325/mo ($25 plus 4 × $75) and WorkOS is $625/mo.
Features on the free plans
Clerk Hobby leaves out MFA, passkeys, SMS codes and custom email templates, keeps a fixed 7-day session and shows Clerk branding; those come with Pro. Clerk includes a custom domain on Hobby. WorkOS lists MFA (TOTP and SMS), passkeys, magic codes, RBAC and organization auth policies for all accounts, but a custom domain for AuthKit, Admin Portal and email sender is $99/mo.
Which to pick
Pick Clerk for a consumer app or early SaaS where the fastest setup and polished components matter most, and where you will have a handful of enterprise customers at most. Pick WorkOS if you expect lots of users on a free plan or you are building B2B software where enterprise SSO is the product requirement and you want an Admin Portal IT teams can self-serve. Both are proprietary; if you want users in your own database, look at Better Auth instead.
Who wins: Clerk or WorkOS?
