Open-source backend in one file: SQLite, auth, files and realtime

A single Go binary with an embedded SQLite database (WAL mode), realtime subscriptions, auth with 15+ OAuth2 providers, file storage and an admin dashboard, plus JavaScript and Dart SDKs. Self-hosted only, scales vertically on one server, and can be extended as a Go or JavaScript framework instead of cloud functions. MIT-licensed (~61k GitHub stars); still pre-1.0, so full backward compatibility isn't guaranteed yet.

Best for: Small and mid-size apps that want a free, portable backend on one cheap VPS

Score breakdown

Why this score: Unbeatable ownership and cost: one MIT-licensed file you run anywhere, with very strong momentum (~61k stars, regular releases). Fit for vibe coders is lower: self-host only, single-server scaling, no cloud functions, pre-1.0, and the FAQ explicitly warns people who plan to rely only on an AI tool not to use it.

Based on desk research of official pricing pages and docs; see methodology.
